Is this an emergency or can urgent care help?

Some signs need a 24-hour emergency hospital, not an urgent care clinic. Go straight there if your pet:

• Can't breathe easily, or the gums look blue, gray or very pale.

• Has collapsed or can't stand.

• Is having a seizure, or had more than one today.

• Has a tight, swollen belly and keeps trying to vomit with nothing coming up.

• Was hit by a car or is bleeding heavily.

Petfolk Kennesaw is a primary and urgent care clinic, not an emergency hospital. VEG, a 24-hour emergency hospital at 1290 Johnson Ferry Road in Marietta, takes walk-ins with no appointment.

What problems can be seen today at Petfolk Kennesaw?

Most problems that can't wait but are not life-threatening are a good fit:

• Vomiting or diarrhea, especially if it started in the last day or two

• Limping, a swollen paw or a broken nail

• A cut, scrape or bite from another dog

• Head shaking, ear scratching or a smell from the ears

• Red, itchy skin or a hot spot

• A squinting or watery eye

• Straining to pee, peeing small amounts or accidents in the house

• Swallowing something odd, like a sock or a bit of chocolate

The clinic has an in-house lab for many tests, digital x-rays and basic ultrasound. That means the vet can often find the cause before you leave, and the on-site pharmacy means many pets go home with medicine the same day.

What happens when you arrive

You are taken to your own exam room right away, so a stressed pet does not sit in a busy lobby. A team member asks what happened, checks breathing, gums and temperature, and then the vet examines your pet. Fear Free handling is standard here, which helps a lot when a pet is already sore and scared.

Before any test or treatment, the vet walks you through the options. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit.

Mr President had woken up sick that morning and they were able to take him in right away- and he is now back to his normal happy cat self!

Does urgent care cost more than a regular visit?

Costs at Petfolk Kennesaw depend on what your pet needs, so the vet explains each step and its price first. If you join PetfolkCare, which starts at $199 a year, members can reach a 24/7 care team by chat. That can help you decide whether a symptom needs a visit at all.

Weekend problems and Georgia heat

Pets get sick on weekends too, and many regular vets are closed. Petfolk Kennesaw is open weekends and has same-day times, so you don't have to wait until the work week starts.

Kennesaw summers are hot and humid. After a run or a climb up Kennesaw Mountain, heavy panting, drooling, wobbly legs or a dark red tongue can mean heat stress. Move your dog into the shade, offer water and call right away.

A male cat straining in the litter box

A male cat who keeps going to the litter box and passes little or no urine may have a blocked bladder. This can turn serious within hours. If Petfolk Kennesaw can't see him right away, go to a 24-hour emergency hospital.
