Pet Pharmacy & Prescriptions

A refill isn't paperwork. It's a check that the medication still fits your pet's weight, labs, and health. Petfolk Johns Creek, at Medley in Johns Creek Town Center, prescribes and refills pet medications under Georgia's rules for the vet-client-patient relationship.

If your pet already has a current exam on file, many refills move quickly. Ask for one at our Johns Creek clinic.

Call (470) 964-6691 or book online. Open 8am–6pm, seven days a week.

When to go to a 24-hour emergency hospital

Go to a 24-hour emergency hospital if your pet swallowed someone else's medication, a full bottle, or a human drug; has facial swelling, hives, or trouble breathing after a new medication; or has a seizure, collapse, or severe vomiting after a dose.

Petfolk Johns Creek is open 8am to 6pm, seven days a week. We don't provide overnight care, so anything that can't wait until morning belongs at a 24-hour emergency hospital.

What Needs a Prescription

Prescription medications require a veterinarian who has examined your pet, which the profession calls a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, or VCPR. The AVMA explains what that relationship involves.

  • Prescription: heartworm preventives, oral flea and tick products, antibiotics, pain and anti-inflammatory drugs, seizure, thyroid, and heart medications, insulin, and prescription diets.

  • Often over the counter: many topical flea treatments and collars, ear cleaners, and basic supplements.

  • Depends on the product: some dewormers are sold over the counter, while others need a vet's diagnosis first.

What Georgia Law Changed in 2025

Georgia SB 105 took effect July 1, 2025, and formally recognized veterinary telemedicine. Two parts matter for refills:

  • Telemedicine still requires a VCPR. Diagnosing, treating, or prescribing remotely is allowed only for a pet a vet already has a relationship with. General advice and triage don't require one.

  • The relationship covers the whole clinic. A VCPR now extends to every licensed veterinarian at the same facility, so any Johns Creek vet can refill a medication under a relationship another vet there established.

That means you don't have to wait for one specific doctor's schedule to get a refill authorized, as long as the exam on file is current.

Why Some Refills Need a Recheck

Bodies change. A dog who did well on a long-term medication last spring may have gained weight, started drinking more, or shown new changes on lab work. Before authorizing more, the vet looks at:

  • When your pet was last examined

  • Lab work for drugs processed by the liver or kidneys

  • Current weight, since many doses follow weight

  • Side effects you've noticed at home

  • For heartworm prevention, whether the yearly test is current

The recheck exam behind a refill is low-key. Our Gentle Handling team keeps it short and calm, so the visit isn't the stressful part of your week.

“Offered him new meds than his previous treatment and they worked a lot better.”

When You Don't Need a New Prescription

  • You still have unopened prevention at home. Check the expiration date and the weight range on the box; if both still fit, use it.

  • The product is over the counter and your vet has already cleared it for your pet.

  • A single soft stool after a food change, with a pet acting normal. That's usually a diet issue, not a medication one.

Never reach for human medications or leftover pills from another pet. Doses and safety margins differ between species.

Getting Rid of Old Medications

Johns Creek Police keep a free, anonymous drug drop box in the lobby of City Hall, 11360 Lakefield Drive, in the same Town Center as Medley. It's open Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 4:30pm. The department also gives out Deterra bags for liquid medications. Syringes and needles aren't accepted.

Call ahead to confirm the box accepts pet prescriptions before dropping them off.

What Prescriptions Cost Depends On

  • The medication and how much your pet needs, often set by weight

  • Whether a recheck exam or lab work is due before the refill

  • How many months of supply you buy at once

You'll get an estimate before anything is prescribed. PetfolkCare members get exams covered up to $99 per visit and 10% off preventives and lab work.

Refills That Still Fit Your Pet
