Wellness Exams

Pets hide pain and illness well, so the changes that matter often show up on an exam table before they show up at home. Petfolk Johns Creek, at Medley in Johns Creek Town Center, does wellness exams for dogs and cats seven days a week.

Petfolk recommends at least two wellness exams a year. Book one at our Johns Creek clinic.

Call (470) 964-6691 or book online. Open 8am–6pm, seven days a week.

When to go to a 24-hour emergency hospital

Don't wait for a wellness visit if something is wrong now. Go to a 24-hour emergency hospital for trouble breathing, collapse, a seizure that won't stop, a swollen belly with unproductive retching, a male cat straining with no urine, heavy bleeding, or a known toxin.

Petfolk Johns Creek is open 8am to 6pm, seven days a week. We don't provide overnight care, so anything that can't wait until morning belongs at a 24-hour emergency hospital.

What the Exam Covers

  • Weight and body condition, compared with last time

  • Eyes, ears, nose, and mouth, including teeth and gums

  • Heart and lungs

  • Belly, for organ size, pain, or lumps

  • Skin and coat, for lumps, parasites, and irritation

  • Joints and mobility, since stiffness is easy to miss at home

  • Behavior, appetite, thirst, and litter box or bathroom habits

AAHA and the AVMA's preventive care guidelines call for a checkup at least once a year, including for indoor cats, because animals are so good at hiding disease.

A Plan for Your Pet's Life Stage

The exam ends with a prevention plan that fits your pet's age and lifestyle:

  • Which vaccines are due, and which ones your pet's lifestyle calls for

  • Heartworm, flea, and tick prevention, and when the next heartworm test is due

  • Whether screening lab work makes sense this year

  • Dental care, from home brushing to a professional cleaning

  • Diet and weight goals

Puppies, kittens, adults, and seniors need different plans. A young adult cat and a 12-year-old dog shouldn't get the same checklist.

When a Wellness Exam Isn't the Right Visit

A wellness exam is for a pet who seems healthy. If your pet has a new problem, like vomiting, limping, or a sudden change in appetite, book a sick or urgent visit instead. That visit focuses on the problem and leaves room for tests.

If you're simply due for vaccines or a prevention refill and had an exam recently, ask whether a full exam is needed this time.

What Happens at the Visit

  1. Bring a list of questions, current medications, and a fresh stool sample if a fecal test is due.

  2. You go straight to an exam room and stay with your pet. Our Gentle Handling team uses treats and lets your pet settle before the hands-on part.

  3. The vet does the exam and talks through what they found.

  4. Any vaccines, tests, or prevention come with an estimate first.

  5. Reminders and your pet's records are in the Petfolk app.

“Just a routine exam with vaccines and exam ... Misha has become more at ease because they take such wonderful care and time getting to know her.”

What a Wellness Visit Costs Depends On

  • The wellness exam itself

  • Vaccines your pet is due for

  • Screening tests, such as a fecal test, heartworm test, or lab work

  • Prevention products

You'll get an estimate before anything beyond the exam. PetfolkCare members get exams covered up to $99 per visit and 10% off vaccines, preventives, and lab work.
