Cat Vaccines

Adult cats need fewer vaccines than kittens, but indoor cats still need some. Petfolk Johns Creek, at Medley in Johns Creek Town Center, keeps your cat's core vaccines current and decides on feline leukemia boosters based on your cat's life.

Book at our Johns Creek clinic.

Call (470) 964-6691 or book online. Open 8am–6pm, seven days a week.

When to go to a 24-hour emergency hospital

Mild soreness, sleepiness, or a low appetite for a day after vaccines is common. Go to a 24-hour emergency hospital if your pet has facial swelling, hives, repeated vomiting, trouble breathing, or collapses within hours of a vaccine.

Petfolk Johns Creek is open 8am to 6pm, seven days a week. We don't provide overnight care, so anything that can't wait until morning belongs at a 24-hour emergency hospital.

Core Vaccines for Every Cat

  • FVRCP (feline herpesvirus, calicivirus, and panleukopenia): boosted a year after the kitten series, then usually every three years.

  • Rabies: required by Georgia law for cats, on a one- or three-year schedule depending on the vaccine.

AAHA's summary of the feline vaccination guidelines lists FVRCP and rabies as core for all cats, with feline leukemia core only for cats under a year.

Does Your Cat Need Feline Leukemia Boosters?

Feline leukemia (FeLV) spreads through close contact with infected cats. For adult cats, the vaccine depends on risk:

  • Recommended: cats who go outdoors, live with an FeLV-positive cat, or meet cats of unknown status.

  • Often not needed: strictly indoor cats who live alone or with other tested indoor cats.

If anything changes, like a new cat, a move, or outdoor time, bring it up at the next visit.

Injection-Site Lumps

A small, firm lump where a vaccine was given is common and usually fades within a few weeks. Tell the vet if a lump is still there after three months, is larger than about two centimeters, or is still growing a month after the vaccine. Those lumps should be checked.

What Happens at the Visit

  1. Bring your cat in a carrier that's been left out at home for a few days, with a towel over it in the car.

  2. Your cat can stay in or near the carrier. Our Gentle Handling team uses towels, treats, and a quiet pace instead of scruffing.

  3. The exam confirms your cat is healthy for vaccines.

  4. Updated records and reminders are in the Petfolk app.

“I have a very anxious cat. The staff at Petfolk are so gentle and patient with her.”

— Mary S., Petfolk client

When Your Cat May Not Need a Vaccine Today

If your cat's core vaccines are current, the visit may be an exam only. Older cats with health problems may have their schedule adjusted. The vet will tell you what's due and what can wait.

What Cat Vaccines Cost Depend On

  • Which core boosters are due

  • Whether FeLV is recommended, and whether a test is needed first

  • Whether vaccines are given at a wellness visit

You'll get an estimate before anything is given. PetfolkCare members get exams covered up to $99 per visit and 10% off vaccines.
