Puppy Vaccines in Huntersville, NC, From Your Local Vet

A visit-by-visit checklist for your puppy's first months, from first shots to park-ready.

Most puppies need three or four vaccine visits, 2 to 4 weeks apart, from about 8 weeks old until after 16 weeks, then boosters at about 1 year. North Carolina law requires a rabies vaccine once a puppy is over four months old. Petfolk Veterinary & Urgent Care - Huntersville is a vet clinic in Huntersville, North Carolina, that sets your puppy's schedule at the first visit and writes out each date.

Started shots with a breeder or rescue? We usually continue the series rather than restart it. Call (704) 800-4149 or book online.

What happens at each puppy vaccine visit?

At Petfolk Huntersville, puppies get a distemper-parvo booster every 2 to 4 weeks until they are older than 16 weeks, as the AAHA canine vaccination guidelines advise. Each visit also includes a weight check and a nose-to-tail exam.

  1. About 8 weeks. First DA2PP shot (distemper, adenovirus, parainfluenza and parvovirus). The vet checks heart, eyes, ears, gums, belly and skin, often tests a stool sample, and starts deworming. Our deworming page lays out the timing. Bring breeder or shelter records.

  2. About 12 weeks. Second DA2PP and first leptospirosis dose. Kennel cough (Bordetella) is added for daycare, boarding, grooming or dog parks; canine influenza and Lyme are discussed case by case.

  3. At 16 weeks or a little after. Final DA2PP and second leptospirosis dose, plus rabies. In North Carolina, puppies can get their first rabies vaccine at three months and must have it once they are over four months old (NC Division of Public Health). Our rabies vaccine page explains the law, the tag and the certificate.

  4. About 1 year. Boosters for distemper-parvo and leptospirosis, and the first rabies booster, which North Carolina requires one year after the first dose (10A NCAC 41G .0101).

Heartworm, flea and tick prevention start early and are dosed by weight. A microchip can be placed at a puppy visit or with the spay or neuter.

Why does a puppy need a series of shots?

A puppy is born with antibodies from its mother's milk that protect for a while but also block vaccines, and nobody can tell exactly when they fade. A series of doses through about 16 weeks covers that gap. The last dose is the one most likely to stick, so skipping it leaves a puppy unprotected just as it starts meeting the world.

Does my Huntersville puppy need the leptospirosis vaccine?

Most do. Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease spread in the urine of wildlife such as rats, squirrels, raccoons and deer, and it lives in slow or stagnant water, lakes and marshy ground. The AVMA's 2025 guidance says all dogs are at risk regardless of lifestyle, starting with two doses from 12 weeks, then yearly. For a puppy who will swim in Lake Norman or splash in creeks, it is an easy call.

How do Huntersville puppies move through the series at Petfolk?

Puppies who start their vaccines at Petfolk Huntersville typically get their first distemper-parvo shot at about 11 weeks old (October 2025 to September 2026).

  • About 7 in 10 (71%) come back for at least a second distemper-parvo booster.

  • About 3 in 4 (73%) also get their rabies vaccine at Petfolk.

  • 46% of puppies across Petfolk's Charlotte-area clinics come back for a third core dose, so book the later visits early.

When can my puppy go to a Mecklenburg County dog park?

Only after the series and the rabies shot are done. Mecklenburg County's dog parks page says dogs using the off-leash areas need current vaccines, including rabies (with the tag number), DHLPP and Bordetella. Until then, puppy classes that require proof of first shots, your own yard, and play with healthy, vaccinated dogs you know are good ways to socialize.

What if my puppy misses a booster?

Call Petfolk Huntersville at (704) 800-4149. A short delay usually means picking up where you left off; a long gap may mean repeating part of the series.

What should I do if my puppy seems sick after shots?

Mild soreness, a sleepy evening and a smaller appetite for a day are common. Call Petfolk Huntersville if your puppy is still off the next day. Go to a 24-hour emergency hospital for facial swelling, hives, repeated vomiting or trouble breathing within a few hours of a vaccine, or for vomiting or bloody diarrhea in a puppy who isn't fully vaccinated, which can be parvovirus.
