What is making my pet so itchy?
Most itch comes from one of four causes, and many pets have more than one:
Fleas: even one bite can set off a pet with flea allergy. Look for scratching near the base of the tail.
Environmental allergies: pollen, grass, mold and dust mites. Pets lick paws, rub faces and chew their sides.
Food allergies: less common, but they cause itch all year, often around the ears and rear end.
Infections: yeast or bacteria move in once skin is broken or damp, and they make the itch worse.
Mites, ringworm (a fungus, not a worm) and hormone problems can also cause hair loss. That is why the vet checks closely before treating.
Why does skin flare up here in spring and summer?
Atlanta's spring pollen ranks among the highest in the country, and allergens hang around well into fall. Then humid, hot summers keep skin damp and warm, which helps yeast and bacteria grow. Dogs who roll in the long grass on the park's hills or splash in creeks come home with both.
This shows up across Petfolk too. Between October 2025 and September 2026, about one in five sick visits in June through September was for a skin problem, compared with about one in six in December through February.
How does the vet find the cause?
The vet starts with questions: when the itch began, whether it is worse in some seasons, what your pet eats and what flea product they use. Then they look at the skin and coat closely and may run simple tests in the clinic:
Skin cytology: tape or a swab on the skin, checked under the microscope for yeast and bacteria
Skin scraping: a gentle scrape to look for mites
Flea comb check: for fleas or flea dirt
Fungal test: for ringworm, if hair loss is round or patchy
From there, treatment may include itch relief, medicated shampoo, antibiotics or antifungals, and strong flea control. Itch medicine can bring relief within a day or two. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit.
Hot spots need quick care
A hot spot is a red, wet, painful patch that can grow in hours, often after a swim or in humid weather. Dogs with thick coats get them most. The vet clips the fur, cleans the area and starts medicine. Don't cover it with a bandage, and keep your dog from licking it.
When the itch comes back
If your pet itches every spring or never fully stops, the vet may suggest a food trial with a special diet for several weeks, or allergy testing and treatment. Year-round flea and tick prevention is part of almost every skin plan in Georgia. Itchy dogs often have sore ears too, so the vet checks both.
Getting ready for a skin visit
Skip bathing your pet for two to three days before the visit, so the vet can see the skin as it really is. Bring the name of your flea product, food and treats, and photos if the rash comes and goes. Gentle, Fear Free handling helps itchy pets, who are often sore and touchy.
At home, write down when the itch is worst, which spots your pet licks and anything new, such as a shampoo, bedding or a trip to a new park. A short note like this often points the vet to the cause faster than any test. Keep using the flea product you have until the vet says to change it.
Skin signs that can't wait
Go to a 24-hour emergency hospital if your pet's face or throat swells suddenly, they have trouble breathing, or hives come with vomiting or collapse. That can be a severe allergic reaction. MedVet Atlanta on Century Circle NE sees emergencies without an appointment.
