What are the signs of allergies in dogs and cats?
Licking or chewing the paws.
Scratching the face, ears, armpits or belly.
Ear infections that return every few months.
Red skin, rashes or a brown stain on light fur from licking.
Scooting or licking under the tail.
In cats: overgrooming, bald patches on the belly, and scabs around the head and neck.
Itchy skin accounts for about 1 in 9 sick visits at our Houston-area clinics (Oct 2025 to Sep 2026). Allergies sit behind many of them.
What is my pet allergic to?
Pet allergies fall into three groups:
Fleas. In an allergic pet, the bite of a single flea can set off days of itch. This is the easiest one to fix.
The environment. Pollen, dust mites, mold and grasses. These flare with the seasons. The Houston Health Department tracks cedar elm pollen in September and October, so many local pets itch more in early fall.
Food. Usually a protein, like chicken or beef. Food allergy causes itch all year, and sometimes loose stool.
Many pets have more than one. The vet works through them in order, not by guesswork.
How allergy testing works
Testing is rarely step one. The results only help once fleas and infections are under control. The vet starts by ruling out the simple causes: fleas, mites and skin infection. Our skin conditions page covers those tests.
For food allergy, the best test is a strict diet trial. Your pet eats only a prescription diet for about 8 weeks, with no other treats or flavored chews.
For pollen, dust and mold, the vet may suggest an allergy test, often when you want to start allergy shots or another form of immunotherapy. Across Petfolk, dogs account for 86% of allergy testing and immunotherapy orders, and about 6 in 10 allergy testing orders are a combined test-and-treatment package (Oct 2025 to Sep 2026).
What treatments help with the itch?
Fast itch relief, such as a Cytopoint injection or Apoquel tablets. At our Houston-area clinics, nearly 1 in 5 visits for ear problems include one of these (Oct 2025 to Sep 2026).
Medicated baths and ear cleaners.
Treatment for any skin or ear infection.
Year-round flea control.
Immunotherapy, such as allergy shots, that slowly trains the immune system, made from the test results. Ask which forms are offered.
The team uses Fear Free handling, so shots and ear checks go gently.
Living with an allergic pet in Fulshear
Wipe paws and belly with a damp cloth after walks on the grass. Use the shampoo the vet suggests, and let it sit for the full time on the label before you rinse. Keep flea prevention going every month of the year, because one flea bite can undo weeks of progress. During flare-ups, wash your pet's bedding in hot water each week. Keep a log of flare-ups by month; after a year it shows your pet's pattern (for a cedar elm allergy, that means September and October), and the vet can start treatment before the worst weeks arrive.
What does an allergy visit cost?
A sick visit exam at Petfolk Fulshear starts at $135. Tests, medicines and allergy shots are priced separately. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit.
When a reaction can't wait
Sudden face swelling or hives can follow a bee sting or a new medicine. If your pet also vomits, collapses or has trouble breathing, go to a 24-hour emergency hospital, such as VEG Katy on West Grand Parkway South. Face swelling alone can usually be seen the same day at Petfolk Fulshear.
