Does this wound need a 24-hour hospital?
Go to a 24-hour emergency hospital, such as VEG Katy on West Grand Parkway South, if:
Bleeding soaks through a towel and does not slow after five minutes of firm pressure.
Your pet was hit by a car or fell from a height.
You can see bone, or the wound goes into the chest or belly.
Your pet is struggling to breathe, or the gums look pale.
A large dog bit a small dog or cat on the neck, chest or belly.
Most other injuries can come to Petfolk Fulshear. That includes small cuts and scrapes, bite wounds that are not bleeding hard, torn nails, cut pads, swollen paws and limping after play.
What should I do on the way?
Press a clean towel or gauze on any bleeding and hold it there.
Keep your pet from licking the wound. An old T-shirt works as a cover in a pinch.
Do not pour peroxide or alcohol into a deep wound.
Use a leash or a carrier. A pet in pain may bite, even a sweet one.
If another animal was involved, note what it was and whether you know its vaccine status.
How are bite wounds and cuts treated?
The vet checks your whole pet first. Small punctures from a bite can hide bigger damage under the skin, so the vet looks past the obvious wound. Then the plan may include:
Pain relief and, if needed, sedation so your pet stays still and calm.
Clipping the fur and flushing the wound clean.
Closing it with stitches, or leaving it open to drain if it is a bite.
A bandage, a cone and medicine to take home.
At our Houston-area clinics, about 4 in 5 wound and injury visits send the pet home with a prescription medicine, and the typical patient is about 5 and a half years old (Oct 2025 to Sep 2026). Fear Free handling keeps the visit as calm as it can be for a sore pet.
My dog had an open blister over the weekend, and thankfully Petfolk just opened up and was close by!

Hot pavement and dog park paws
Paw injuries are common in Fort Bend, where summers run long. Texas A&M vets say that if the pavement is too hot for your hand, it is too hot for paws. Walk early in the day and stay on grass when you can.
At the Canine Commons dog park in Cross Creek Ranch, use the wash-down area to rinse sand and burrs off before the ride home, and look at each pad for small cuts. A limp that is still there the next morning is worth a visit.
If your dog bit a person
In Texas, a dog or cat that bites a person must be quarantined for 10 days, even if its rabies shots are current. Keep your pet's rabies certificate where you can find it. The team can answer questions about the next steps.
What does wound care cost?
An urgent exam at Petfolk Fulshear starts at $135. Sedation, stitches, bandages and medicines are priced separately. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit.
Rechecks and stitch removal
Most wounds need a recheck within a few days, and stitches often come out after 10 to 14 days. Keep the cone on until the vet says it can come off. Call (281) 214-6363 if the wound smells, oozes, swells or opens.
