Call (463) 208-4426 or book online. Walk-ins are welcome.

Which injuries need a 24-hour hospital right away?

Go straight to a 24-hour emergency hospital if your pet was hit by a car, has a deep chest or belly wound, is bleeding hard and it won't slow with pressure, can't stand, or is breathing fast and shallow. Petfolk Fishers is a primary and urgent care clinic, not an emergency hospital. Two 24-hour options nearby are VCA Advanced Veterinary Care Center at 7712 Crosspoint Commons in Fishers and MedVet Indianapolis at 9650 Mayflower Park Dr in Carmel.

What wounds can Petfolk Fishers treat today?

  • Cuts and scrapes, including cut paw pads

  • Bite wounds from another dog or a cat

  • Torn or broken nails and dewclaws

  • Small punctures from sticks, glass or wire

  • A new limp or a swollen toe

  • Hot spots and raw patches from licking

  • Abscesses, the swollen, painful pockets that often follow a cat fight

First aid on the way in

  1. Press a clean towel or gauze firmly on a bleeding wound for a few minutes.

  2. Keep your pet calm and as still as you can. Even gentle pets may snap when hurt.

  3. Don't put creams, peroxide or alcohol on the wound.

  4. Carry small pets; support large dogs with a towel under the belly.

How does the vet treat a bite or a cut?

The vet checks how deep the wound goes, since bites often look small on the skin but hurt the tissue under it. Most wounds are clipped and cleaned. Some need stitches, a drain, or a bandage. Many pets go home with pain medicine and antibiotics from the on-site pharmacy. If the wound is deep or your pet is very sore, the vet may give sedation first, so cleaning doesn't hurt. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit.

Gentle care for a sore pet

Fear Free and gentle handling are standard at every Petfolk clinic. The team works slowly around sore spots and uses sedation when it is kinder than holding a hurt pet still. One Fishers cat parent kept it short:

Was able to book an appointment the night prior, and got my cat wound care for a reasonable price.

What if my pet was bitten by another animal?

Get the other pet's owner's name and phone number, and ask about its rabies shots. The Indiana Department of Health says a bite from one animal to another doesn't have to be reported, but the bitten pet should see its own vet, who may give a rabies booster. If a person was bitten, report it through the local health department or the state form, and you can also file a report with animal control or police where it happened. Under Indiana rule 345 IAC 1-5-2, dogs and cats 3 months and older must be vaccinated against rabies.

Healing at home

Keep the bandage clean and dry, and use the cone so your pet can't lick or chew stitches. Check the wound every day. Call Petfolk Fishers if it gets hot, swollen, smelly or starts to leak, or if your pet stops eating. Hold off on Geist swims and muddy trails until the vet says the skin has closed.
