Kitten Vaccines in Far North Central San Antonio, From Your Local Vet

From the first FVRCP to rabies, a clear plan for your new kitten.

Petfolk Veterinary & Urgent Care - Far North Central is a vet in San Antonio, TX, that vaccinates kittens from about 6 to 8 weeks old. Kittens get an FVRCP booster every 3 to 4 weeks until about 16 weeks, and a rabies shot by 16 weeks, as Texas law requires.

Whether your kitten came from a breeder, a shelter, or the parking lot of the grocery store, the plan starts the same way: an exam, a stool check and the first shot.

What is the kitten vaccine schedule?

At Petfolk Far North Central, most kittens follow this plan:

  1. 6 to 8 weeks: first FVRCP (rhinotracheitis, calicivirus, panleukopenia).

  2. 9 to 12 weeks: second FVRCP, and a first FeLV (feline leukemia) shot if your kitten may go outside or meet outdoor cats.

  3. 12 to 16 weeks: third FVRCP and the FeLV booster.

  4. By 16 weeks: rabies.

Across Petfolk, kittens usually got their first FVRCP with us at about 10 weeks old. About 7 in 10 who started the series came back for at least a second booster, and nearly two-thirds also got their rabies shot at Petfolk (first doses Oct 2025 to Jun 2026). The second and third boosters are what turn a first shot into real protection, so put them on the calendar before you leave.

Found a kitten? Start here

San Antonio has a lot of kittens born outdoors, and many families meet theirs by surprise. If you've just picked one up:

  • Keep the kitten apart from your other cats until the vet has checked it.

  • Offer warmth first, then food. Very young kittens can't keep themselves warm.

  • Don't give cow's milk; it often causes diarrhea.

  • Book a visit within a day or two, or walk in sooner if the kitten is weak.

What happens at the first kitten visit?

At Petfolk Far North Central, the first kitten visit covers:

  • An exam of eyes, ears, mouth, heart and belly, plus a weight check.

  • A stool test for worms and other parasites; see deworming in Far North Central.

  • Flea control that's safe for your kitten's age and weight.

  • A test for feline leukemia and FIV if your kitten's history is unknown.

  • Your questions on litter, food, scratching and play biting.

Fear Free handling is standard at every Petfolk clinic. Kittens who learn early that the carrier, the car and the exam table lead to treats tend to stay easier to handle for life.

Do indoor kittens need every vaccine?

Indoor kittens need FVRCP and rabies. Panleukopenia virus lasts a long time in the environment and can come in on shoes, and Texas confirmed more rabid cats than dogs in 2025, according to the state health department. FeLV is the one the vet may skip for a kitten who will never go outside and never live with an outdoor cat.

San Antonio also requires cats living inside city limits to be microchipped and registered. Many families add the chip at the spay or neuter, when the kitten is already asleep.

What do kitten vaccines cost?

At Petfolk Far North Central, the price depends on which vaccines and tests your kitten needs at each visit. Wellness exams start at $99, or come with PetfolkCare, which starts at $199 a year and covers the exam part of each visit. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit.

Kitten warning signs

Call the clinic the same day if your kitten stops eating, has diarrhea, sneezes with goopy eyes, or seems weak. Kittens dehydrate fast. If a kitten is limp, cold or not responding, go to a 24-hour hospital such as BluePearl Pet Hospital Stone Oak on E Sonterra Blvd.
