Spay and Neuter in East Cobb, Marietta, GA, From Your Local Vet
A planned surgery day, explained step by step, with home care you can follow.
Petfolk Veterinary & Urgent Care - East Cobb Marietta is a vet in East Cobb that spays and neuters dogs and cats in its own surgery suite. Most cats are ready at about 5 to 6 months old, and the right age for a dog depends on breed and adult size.
A spay removes a female pet's ovaries and uterus. A neuter removes a male pet's testicles. Both stop unplanned litters, and both can lower the risk of some cancers and roaming.

What is the best age to spay or neuter my pet?
For most cats, the vet at Petfolk East Cobb suggests surgery at about 5 to 6 months, before a first heat. Dogs vary more. Small breeds are often done around 6 months, while many large and giant breeds wait until they are closer to full grown, because that timing may help their joints.
Across Petfolk, the typical cat is spayed or neutered at about 7 months old and the typical dog at about 12 months (Oct 2025 to Sep 2026). At least 1 in 4 of the dogs on our surgery table are over 50 pounds, so big dogs are routine for the team. The vet will talk through your dog's breed, size and lifestyle before you pick a date.
Before surgery day
The first step is a regular exam at Petfolk East Cobb. The vet checks your pet's heart, lungs and weight, and may suggest blood work so anesthesia can be planned around how the liver and kidneys are working. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit.
The night before, the team tells you when to stop food. Most pets can keep drinking water. Bring any medicines your pet takes so the vet can say which to give that morning.
What happens on the day of the surgery?
On surgery day at Petfolk East Cobb, you drop your pet off in the morning and pick them up later that day. Here is the usual order:
A team member checks your pet in and answers last questions.
Your pet gets medicine to relax and to ease pain.
Your pet goes under anesthesia, with breathing, heart rate and temperature watched the whole time.
The vet does the surgery in the on-site suite.
Your pet wakes up in a quiet, warm spot while the team keeps watch.
You get a call when your pet is awake, then a pickup time.
Fear Free handling is standard at every Petfolk clinic, so a nervous dog or cat is handled gently from drop-off to pickup. Many families also add a microchip that day. Across Petfolk, nearly two in three microchips are placed during a spay or neuter (Oct 2025 to Sep 2026).
We’ve had simple check ups to sick visits, teeth cleaning and a spay done.

How long does recovery take after a spay or neuter?
Most dogs and cats need about 10 to 14 days of rest after the surgery. During that time:
Keep the cone or recovery suit on so your pet can't lick the stitches.
Skip baths, swimming and the Chattahoochee River for now.
Use short leash walks only, and keep your dog out of the dog park at Sweat Mountain Park until the vet says yes.
Check the cut each day for swelling, redness or fluid.
Your pet may be sleepy the first evening and eat less than usual. That is common.
When to call us
Call Petfolk East Cobb at (678) 539-8441 if the cut opens, keeps leaking, or looks more swollen each day, or if your pet won't eat by the next day. If your pet has pale gums, is very weak or can't stand, go to a 24-hour emergency hospital such as Dogwood Veterinary Specialty and Emergency on Powers Ferry Common SE in Marietta.
