Puppies and kittens need deworming every two weeks from about 2 weeks old, and adult pets need it when a stool test finds worms. Petfolk Veterinary & Urgent Care - Concord is a vet clinic for dogs and cats at 2425 Herrons Nest Pl NW, Suite 100, Concord, NC 28027, and it matches the medicine to the worm, because no single dewormer clears every kind.

Which worms do Concord dogs and cats pick up?
Roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and tapeworms are the four intestinal worms Petfolk Concord treats most, and each spreads a different way.
Roundworms. Puppies and kittens get them from their mother, and adults swallow eggs from soil. Look for a pot belly or spaghetti-like worms in stool. Children can catch them too. Repeat doses of pyrantel or fenbendazole clear them.
Hookworms. Larvae in soil are swallowed or burrow through the skin. Pale gums, weakness and dark or bloody stool show up most in puppies. In Cabarrus County, 3.61% of dogs tested in 2025 were positive, according to Companion Animal Parasite Council data.
Whipworms (mostly dogs). Eggs can live in soil for years. Diarrhea with mucus and weight loss are common, though many dogs show no signs. Fenbendazole is given as a series, because one dose does not finish the job.
Tapeworms. Pets swallow an infected flea while grooming, or eat rodents or rabbits. Rice-like segments near the tail are the clue. Praziquantel treats them, and flea control keeps them from coming back.
Giardia and coccidia are single-celled organisms, not worms, and need different medicine.
Kittens get dewormed most
At Petfolk Concord, 27% of kitten wellness visits included a dewormer from October 2025 to September 2026, compared with 18% of puppy visits and 1% of adult dog visits. After the first year, routine deworming gives way to a monthly preventive and stool tests.
What deworming schedule do vets follow?
Most vets, including the Petfolk Concord team, follow the Companion Animal Parasite Council schedule.
Puppies and kittens: start at about 2 weeks old and repeat every 2 weeks until regular parasite control begins. Our puppy vaccine page shows how these visits line up with the shot series.
After that: a monthly preventive that also covers intestinal worms, year-round. Many heartworm preventives do double duty here.
Adults: stool tests at least twice a year, more often for dogs that go to daycare, boarding or dog parks.
Newly adopted pets: a stool test and deworming at the first visit, whatever the shelter records say.
Why does Petfolk Concord ask for a stool sample first?
A fecal exam is a microscope check of a small stool sample. It tells the doctor which parasite is there, so your pet gets the right drug instead of a guess, and it lowers the chance of worms reaching other pets and family members. Our fecal exam page explains how to collect a good sample.
Some worms shed eggs only now and then, so one negative test does not always mean a pet is clear. If signs continue, the doctor may repeat the test.
Keep the yard and the bark park clean
Pick up after your dog every time. Eggs and larvae build up wherever many dogs relieve themselves, and Weddington Road Bark Park has separate fenced off-leash areas for small and large dogs.
Bag stool on walks, at the park and in your own yard.
Wash your hands after yard work and litter box cleanup.
Treat every pet in the home that the doctor recommends, at the same time.
What is normal after a dewormer?
Most pets have no reaction. A few have mild vomiting or loose stool for a day, and you may see dead worms in the stool, which is normal. Keep to the full schedule, because many dewormers kill adult worms but not larvae still developing, and the second dose catches those.
What a dewormer visit costs
Deworming is usually done at a wellness exam, which starts at $99 or is included with PetfolkCare. The dewormer depends on your pet's weight and the product. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit. Fear-free handling is standard at every Petfolk clinic, so the exam stays calm for nervous kittens.
Weak, pale or vomiting: go now
Go to a 24-hour emergency hospital if your pet is very weak, has white or very pale gums, keeps vomiting or has a swollen, painful belly. A heavy hookworm load in a young puppy can cause serious blood loss. Petfolk Concord is open 8 AM to 6 PM, seven days a week, and has no overnight care.
Pet parents from Mallard Creek and across Concord can bring a fresh stool sample and book at Petfolk Veterinary & Urgent Care - Concord, or see all veterinary services in Concord.
