Every adult cat in North Carolina needs two core vaccines, rabies and FVRCP, and cats that go outside often need feline leukemia (FeLV) too. Petfolk Veterinary & Urgent Care - Concord is a vet clinic in Concord, North Carolina, that gives cat vaccines after a hands-on exam, in a private exam room so your cat never waits beside a curious dog.
This page covers adult cats. Kittens follow a faster series, laid out on the kitten vaccines page. Call (980) 360-2922 or book online.
Which vaccines does an adult cat need?
An adult cat needs rabies and FVRCP, and the Petfolk Concord vet adds FeLV when your cat's life calls for it.
Rabies. Required by law and incurable once signs appear. The rabies vaccine page covers certificates and booster dates.
FVRCP. One shot against three viruses: feline viral rhinotracheitis (sneezing and runny eyes), calicivirus (mouth ulcers) and panleukopenia, which attacks the gut and white blood cells. These viruses ride in on hands and shoes, so indoor cats are not fully out of reach.
FeLV. Feline leukemia spreads through grooming, shared bowls and fights. The American Association of Feline Practitioners treats it as core for kittens and a lifestyle choice for adults. Ask about it if your cat goes outside, lives with a cat that does, or you foster.
Weight, temperature and gums before any cat shot
At Petfolk Concord, the vet examines your cat before any vaccine, because a shot works best in a healthy body. Weight loss can point to a thyroid, kidney or dental problem. A fever can mean the shot should wait a few days. Sneezing, eye discharge or red gums show up here, and so do flea dirt and a heart murmur.
Bring certificates from a shelter, breeder or previous vet. Product names and dates help the vet avoid repeat doses.
FVRCP leads at Petfolk Concord
FVRCP is the most common cat vaccine at Petfolk Concord, given at 74% of cat vaccine visits from October 2025 to September 2026. About 1 in 4 of those visits (25%) included FeLV, and more than half (57%) included rabies. Of the cat rabies vaccines given at Petfolk Concord in that window, 96% were PureVax, a recombinant vaccine made for cats.
Does an indoor cat in Concord need a rabies vaccine?
Yes. North Carolina's rabies statute (G.S. 130A-185) requires every cat over four months old to be vaccinated, with no exception for indoor cats. Indoor cats slip out doors, and bats sometimes get into homes. Cats are the domestic animal most often found with rabies in North Carolina, partly because outdoor cats hunt wildlife (NC Division of Public Health).
One difference from dogs: the Cabarrus County animal ordinance does not require cats to wear the rabies tag. Keep the certificate somewhere safe, because a boarder or new vet will ask for it.
A calmer carrier ride
Most of a cat's stress happens before it reaches the exam table. Petfolk Concord suggests a few small steps:
Leave the carrier out for several days, door open, with a soft towel inside.
Choose a carrier that opens from the top, so the vet can often examine your cat without pulling it out.
Cover the carrier with a light towel in the car.
Bring a favorite treat. Some cats will eat during the exam.
Gentle Handling is standard at every Petfolk clinic: slow movements, minimal restraint and breaks when a cat needs them.
Took my cat to get shots here it was the calmest shes ever been at the vet. Kim I., Google review
What is normal after a cat vaccine?
A quiet day, a smaller appetite and a tender spot are common after cat vaccines at Petfolk Concord. Many vets give cat shots low on a leg so any later lump is easy to find. The AAFP's 3-2-1 rule says to have a lump checked if it is still there 3 months after the shot, is larger than 2 centimeters, or is still growing a month later.
Cat vaccines are given at a wellness exam that starts at $99, or is included with the PetfolkCare plan, with each vaccine added on top. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit.
Go to a 24-hour emergency hospital if your cat has open-mouth breathing, collapses or develops a puffy face after a vaccine. Petfolk Concord is open 8 AM to 6 PM, seven days a week, and doesn't provide overnight care.
