Wound & Injury Care in Concord, NC, From Your Local Vet

Cuts, bites and torn nails: what we check, and what you can do on the way.

A bite wound, a cut that gapes, a sliced paw pad or a torn nail that keeps bleeding should be seen by a vet the same day, because bites and deep cuts often hide more damage than they show. Petfolk Veterinary & Urgent Care - Concord is a vet clinic in Concord, North Carolina, that cleans, closes and treats wounds and injuries in dogs and cats, 8 AM to 6 PM, seven days a week.

Heavy bleeding goes to a 24-hour hospital

Go to a 24-hour emergency hospital if bleeding won't slow with firm pressure, a wound is on the chest or belly, your pet was hit by a car, or there is swelling near the throat or trouble breathing. Petfolk Concord doesn't provide overnight care, so call the emergency hospital on your way.

For other cuts, bites and torn nails, call (980) 360-2922 or book online. Calling before you come lets the team prepare.

What first aid helps on the way to the vet?

Pressure, safety and a clean cover. On the way to Petfolk Concord:

  1. Press, don't peek. Hold a clean cloth or gauze firmly on a bleeding wound for several minutes. If blood soaks through, add more on top.

  2. Muzzle gently if needed. Even sweet pets may bite when hurt. Never muzzle a pet that is vomiting or struggling to breathe.

  3. Skip the peroxide. Hydrogen peroxide and alcohol damage healthy tissue. Rinse dirt away with clean lukewarm water.

  4. Keep it covered. Wrap a paw in a clean sock or towel for the ride.

Small holes, bigger damage underneath

At Petfolk Concord, the vet checks bleeding and vital signs first, then how deep the wound goes. Gentle Handling is standard at every Petfolk clinic, and the vet gives pain relief, and often sedation, so a hurting pet isn't held down for cleaning.

  • Depth. Bite wounds often look like small holes while the tissue underneath is torn. The vet may clip the fur to see the full extent.

  • Contamination. Bites, sticks and fences carry bacteria, so wounds are flushed and dead tissue may be trimmed.

  • Close or leave open. Clean, fresh cuts may be stitched. Older or dirty wounds sometimes heal better left open with bandages or a drain, a soft tube that lets fluid escape.

  • Hidden injuries. After a fight or fall, the vet checks the chest and belly; x-rays may be needed.

  • Rabies status. After a bite from another animal, the vet checks that the rabies vaccine is current; the rabies vaccine page explains next steps.

You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit.

How often do wounds bring pets to Petfolk Concord?

About 1 in 12 sick visits at Petfolk Concord (9%) are for wounds and injuries, October 2025 to September 2026. About 3 in 4 of those patients (74%) are dogs, and about a third (35%) go home with an antibiotic. Across Petfolk's Charlotte-area clinics, about 2 in 3 wound visits (68%) are booked the same day.

Which Concord wildlife causes wounds?

Coyotes and copperheads are the two Concord-area wildlife risks Petfolk Concord asks about. Coyotes live in all 100 North Carolina counties, and NC Wildlife notes they may see outdoor cats and small unleashed dogs as prey. Copperheads are North Carolina's most common venomous snake (NC State Extension), and most bites to people happen in yards, leaf litter and woodpiles (WUNC snake season guide). A bitten dog swells fast on the face or leg; keep it still, don't cut, suck or ice the bite, and get care right away.

Cone on, bandage dry

Check the wound daily at home. Call Petfolk Concord if you see spreading redness, swelling, pus, a bad smell, or a bandage that slips or gets wet. Most wounds need a recheck in a few days, and stitches usually come out in 10 to 14 days. The American Veterinary Medical Association has more pet first-aid basics.
