Pet Surgery in Concord, NC, From Your Local Vet

From the consult to the stitches coming out, here is how surgery week runs.

Pet surgery at Petfolk Concord means soft tissue surgery for dogs and cats, such as spays and neuters, lump removals and wound repairs, planned at a consult and done as a day procedure. Petfolk Veterinary & Urgent Care - Concord is a vet clinic in Concord, North Carolina, with ample parking on Herrons Nest Place for carrying a crate in and out.

Soft tissue surgery means operations on skin, muscle and organs rather than bones. If your pet needs something outside that list, the vet will explain referral options. Call (980) 360-2922 or book online.

Cats are half the surgery list

Cats made up nearly half of surgery patients at Petfolk Concord (47%) from October 2025 to September 2026. Across Petfolk's Charlotte-area clinics, more than a third of dog surgeries other than spays, neuters and dental work (38%) were to remove a lump or mass, and the typical dog having one was about 7 years old.

What happens at the surgery consult?

The consult at Petfolk Concord, one to two weeks before the procedure, is when the vet examines your pet, explains the operation and answers your questions. You also get:

  • Pre-anesthetic blood work. It checks the liver and kidneys, which clear anesthesia drugs. The blood work page explains the panel.

  • An estimate. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit. The clinic accepts all major pet insurance, so check whether your plan wants pre-approval.

  • A medication review. Some pills and supplements need to pause before surgery.

How does surgery day go, step by step?

  1. The night before: fasting. Follow the fasting time the team gives you. If your pet sneaks a meal, call in the morning; rescheduling beats guessing.

  2. Morning drop-off. You sign a consent form and leave a phone number you'll answer all day. Gentle Handling is standard at every Petfolk clinic, so the handoff is calm, with treats and no rushing. Ask about extras, like a microchip while your pet is asleep.

  3. Before anesthesia. Most pets get a small IV catheter for fluids and medicine. Pain control starts before the first incision. The American Animal Hospital Association publishes the anesthesia and pain guidelines many vets follow.

  4. The procedure and wake-up. The team monitors your pet throughout, and you can call for an update.

  5. Pickup. The team goes over medicines, incision care and when the cone can come off.

At Petfolk Concord, nearly every surgery patient (96%) went home with prescription medication, such as pain relief.

The first two weeks at home

Recovery after soft tissue surgery usually takes 10 to 14 days of rest, ending with a recheck.

  • Evening of surgery. Many pets are groggy. Offer a small meal and water, and block stairs and slippery floors.

  • Days 1 to 3. Keep your pet calm and confined, with short leash walks only. Check the incision daily. Mild redness is common; discharge, a bad smell, gaping edges or growing swelling are not, so call.

  • Licking. The most common reason incisions fail. Keep the cone on.

  • Days 10 to 14. The vet checks healing and removes skin stitches if there are any. No baths or swimming until then.

For the ride home to Harrisburg or anywhere else, bring a towel for the back seat. If your pet is due to be fixed, the spay and neuter page covers timing.

When is a problem after surgery an emergency?

White or very pale gums, a swollen belly, bleeding that soaks through a bandage or an incision that has opened needs a 24-hour emergency hospital if you can't reach Petfolk Concord. The clinic is open 8 AM to 6 PM, seven days a week, and doesn't provide overnight care.
