Deworming in Boynton Beach, FL, From Your Local Vet

The right dewormer for the worm, from puppy and kitten doses to adult care.

Petfolk Veterinary & Urgent Care - Boynton Beach is a vet in Boynton Beach, FL, that deworms puppies, kittens and adult dogs and cats. Deworming is medicine that clears intestinal worms, such as roundworms, hookworms and tapeworms. Puppies and kittens are usually dewormed several times in their first months, and adults when a test or sign shows worms.

Not every dewormer kills every worm. The vet picks the right one based on your pet's age, weight and test results.

Call (561) 200-1214, book online or walk in.

Does my puppy or kitten need deworming?

Almost always. Most puppies and kittens are born with roundworms or pick them up from their mother's milk. At Petfolk Boynton Beach, young pets are often dewormed at several early vaccine visits, every two to three weeks. Across Petfolk, kittens are the most likely to be dewormed at a wellness visit: 21% of kitten visits compared with 14% of puppy visits (Oct 2025 to Sep 2026).

Bring a stool sample to the first visit if you can, along with any deworming record from the breeder, shelter or rescue. Those records tell the vet which doses your puppy or kitten already had, so nothing is doubled or skipped.

Which worms are common in pets here?

  • Roundworms. Look like spaghetti in stool or vomit. Common in young pets.

  • Hookworms. Small and hard to see, they feed on blood and can cause anemia.

  • Whipworms. A cause of ongoing diarrhea in dogs.

  • Tapeworms. Rice-like pieces near the tail or in bedding. Most come from swallowing fleas while grooming.

Warm, humid South Florida weather keeps fleas and worm eggs going all year, so a pet can pick up worms in any season.

How often should adult pets be dewormed?

It depends on lifestyle. At Petfolk Boynton Beach, the vet looks at:

  1. The yearly fecal test. A positive test means treatment with the right dewormer.

  2. Monthly prevention. Many heartworm products also clear some intestinal worms every month.

  3. Fleas. A pet with fleas may need a tapeworm dewormer too.

  4. Hunting and roaming. Cats who catch lizards or mice, and dogs who eat anything at the park, may need more checks.

Keeping your family safe

Some pet worms can spread to people, especially young children who play in dirt. To lower the risk:

  • Pick up after your dog in the yard and at the park every time.

  • Scoop litter boxes every day.

  • Wash hands after gardening and after handling pets.

  • Cover sandboxes when not in use.

  • Keep pets on monthly prevention.

The City of Boynton Beach's dog parks, like Mangrove Dog Park on E. Boynton Beach Blvd, stay cleaner when everyone scoops.

What does deworming cost?

The price depends on the medicine and your pet's weight. A wellness exam starts at $99 at Petfolk Boynton Beach, or is free with PetfolkCare, which starts at $199 a year. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit.

Fear Free handling is standard at every Petfolk clinic, and most dewormers are a simple tablet or liquid given with a treat.

My puppy loves it here. Never feels like a vet visit to him.

After deworming

You may see dead worms in your pet's stool for a day or two. That's normal. Some pets need a second dose in two to three weeks to catch worms that hatch later. Mild stomach upset can happen. Give every dose on schedule, even once you stop seeing worms. Wash your pet's bedding in hot water after treatment, and pick up the yard every day for the next week, because eggs passed in stool can start the cycle again.

A puppy or kitten with bloody diarrhea, pale gums or weakness needs care the same day. If your pet collapses, go to a 24-hour emergency hospital, such as Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) on North Congress Avenue.
