What can a basic ultrasound do?
At the clinic, the vet uses ultrasound to:
collect a clean urine sample straight from the bladder with a thin needle;
look for free fluid in the belly or chest after an injury, in a quick focused check;
see the bladder wall and look for stones or sludge;
guide a needle safely when the vet needs a sample.
Most of the work is urine. Between October 2025 and September 2026, nearly three in four ultrasound procedures at Petfolk (73%) were guided urine collection. About one in eight (12%) was one of those quick focused scans of the belly or chest.
Why collect urine with ultrasound?
A sample caught from the floor or the litter box picks up bacteria on the way out. A sample taken straight from the bladder does not, so a urine culture gives a true answer about infection. That matters for cats who strain in the litter box and for dogs with repeat bladder infections. The needle is very thin, and most pets barely notice it, especially with treats and gentle support.
If the vet plans a urine sample, ask whether to keep your dog from peeing right before the visit. A full bladder makes the sample quicker to get.
Does my pet need to be shaved or fasted?
The team clips a small patch of fur so the probe touches the skin. For a belly scan, the vet may ask you to hold food for a few hours first, because gas in the stomach blurs the picture. Water is usually fine. The team will give you clear instructions when you book.
What you'll see on the screen
Ultrasound pictures look grainy and gray, and that is normal. The vet points out the bladder, any stones and the needle as it moves, so you can follow along. Many pet parents find it reassuring to watch. If you would rather not see the needle step, just say so and wait in the exam room.
When a specialist scan makes more sense
Some questions need a longer, detailed scan of the liver, spleen, kidneys and intestines, or a heart scan. Those are done by specialists with advanced equipment. Your vet will explain why, suggest options and can share your pet's records with the specialist. Ask the specialist to send the report back to Petfolk too, so the follow-up plan stays in one place.
Calm, clear and priced first
You go to your own exam room on arrival, so your pet does not wait in a noisy lobby. Fear Free handling means the team lets your pet settle, uses treats and keeps holds soft while the probe moves. Most pets lie on a padded cradle or a soft mat, with one team member at the head offering treats.
You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit.
